You! Me! Dancing!
Aug. 29th, 2010 04:40 pmBullet pointing this bitch:
1) One of my crazy racist uncles is visiting. He spent like twenty minutes the other day trying to convince my dad that Obama was a Muslim. I turned up the volume on the soccer game I was streaming. On the topic of Islamophobia, the whole New York mosque debacle makes me want to cut someone.
2) My little sister started high school! And got braces! And joined the volleyball team! What is this why is my little sister growing up?
3) I've been up since 5:30 this morning watching soccer games.
4) My sleep schedule is the strangest thing ever. Sometimes I have a normal night's sleep. Sometimes I sleep in the afternoon. Sometimes I sleep in the morning. Sometimes I don't sleep at all. I blame
familiardevil .
5) Earlier this month,
scorpiod1 wrote me Bela/Henriksen apocafic AU for the
spn_hetexchange . It is perfect, and exemplifies exactly why I think these two would be such an interesting match. SPN het OTP. ♥
6) Speaking of fic exchanges, I have my gift for
spnrarepairs to wrap up. I have 4,500 words of fic written and the front cover and song selections of an accompanying mix done, but now I have to push through to the end. Ugh.
7) Holy shit it's raining. THAT OFFICIALLY MEANS SUMMER IS OVER. D: Except I still have a month till school.
8) On the topic of school, I'm flying back to Chicago a week and a half early. Which means I have to figure out who's couch I'm crashing.
9) I just realized I've been doing numbers when I originally said bullet points. Huh.
10) I think my laptop is going to get fixed soon.
And now for something not in list format! I watched the first two episodes of that new Sherlock show on BBC, which is apparently the Next Big Thing in fandom, and my thoughts are below.
This show is Boring. As. Fuck.
Which is both strange and disappoint as I'm a sucker for these kinds of [odd couple] + [murder mystery] = syndication for life! type shows.
Granted, the plot isn't much. The plot is never much. But, in the two episodes I've watched- each of which was over an hour long- they've failed to set up any kind of series or season arc which would draw me in.
If you look at Supernatural- which, I admit, is by no means a master of it's own arc- you had at least three hooks to pull you in for the long term by the very first episode: 1) Where is dad? 2) Who or what killed Mom and Jessica? and 3) Will Sam and Dean be able to fix their relationship.
Here, we have: 1) Who is this mysterious M that's funding this Chinese smuggling ring and does he have any relation to this mysterious Moriarty who's .... bribing cab drivers to murder people by ripping off the Westley vs. Viccini death match in The Princess Bride?
And, obviously, anyone with even a passing acquaintance with Sherlock Holmes is going to know the answer to that.
Moving to a micro level, the plots within the story haven't been impressive either. Despite each episode being over an hour long, nothing really happens, and they don't make you care enough about the victims to really care if the murder gets solved. Which is fine, I don't care about the murders on Psych. I watch Psych for the chemistry between the leads.
Which brings me to the most damning reason Sherlock is Not a Good Show: the leads, and their chemistry, or lack thereof.
Sherlock Holmes is annoying. Not just in this version, but in every version. He's arrogant, cold, and a know it all. He's probably schizoid. And, yes, this version's Sherlock is probably more annoying than most with his constant whines of, "How does it feel to be so stupid? How strange it must be to be in your little mind." We get it Sherlock, you're smarter than us. But there are ways to get around that annoyingness!
In the stories, which I've only read a few of, admittedly, Holmes is always tempered by Watson's writing. You seem him through the lens of someone who is fond of and admires him. In the recent Guy Ritchie movie, RDJ gives him pathos and charm. He's still an arrogant know-it-all, but you very much get the sense that he finds his intellect incredibly isolating. He understands how humans work, and yet he can't manage a simple relationship. Which is why Watson leaving to get married is so appalling to him; he is literally losing the one person in the world who he has an actual relationship with.
I know it's not fair to demand that this actor be Robert Downey Jr. But he needs to bring something to the table to make Sherlock more palatable or at least empathizable. And he doesn't do that.
As for Watson. Watson is just... bland. You know there's something wrong when Watson is being threatened at gunpoint and I can't bring myself to care whether he lives or dies.
And together, they fight crime! And are annoying and bland.
Finally, and to wrap up this epically long whining, the whole gimmick of this show is that it's a modern retelling of Sherlock Holmes. But so far, that just seems to be: Holmes and Watson with... CELLPHONES. They haven't managed a real sense of how placing the Sherlock Holmes story in a modern environment affects the story in any tangible way. To a certain extent, there's no reason why it would. Holmes's genius is deduction, which is low tech by nature. (Though, how much do I love the whole "WET" "BLOOD" "RANDOM OBSERVATION" word bubbles that pop up when Sherlock is examining something? A lot. And by "love" and "a lot," I mean I laugh my ass off.)
And if you're going to modernize it, modernize it. Make one of them a woman! Or a black guy! Set it in California and have them stalk seedy adulterers (which is what most PIs do).
Oh wait. That would be Psych.

Is that a reply? Should I pick your icons now? And yes. It was that hilariously translated article about Ribery and Gourcuff fighting.
The whole being molested by her dad thing, and that's why she's so ~amoral. It's cliche. And she would be so much more badass if that's just how she was. Not everyone's damage or personality is attributable to a tragic life story.

Date: 2010-08-30 12:02 am (UTC)Ohmygod, this whole thing. I read about/hear about all the hate regarding this, and I just want to scream. Americans are disgusting me so much lately. Isn't this country allegedly about religious freedom--for all religions, not just Christian? And why can't people get over the whole concept that if an extremist does a bad thing, then *everyone* of that group is obviously horrible and evil. I just...GARGH. I want...I sort of want *every* religious group to have a holy/sacred/meditative site there--but at the same time, I sort of want that site to be no big deal and just put a freaking strip mall there and quit obsessively dwelling on the event. Because yeah, a bad thing happened, but honestly, how long has it been--sure you remember, but you move on, not wallow in fear and vengeance. I'm just so tired that people in general, but especially in this country, can't ever get the concept that hate and discrimination is wrong. Not just wrong for a few groups, but okay against others.
And good grief, the Obama is a Muslim thing. I just want to yell at people who keep coming up with this big conspiracy (that, and the he isn't a US citizen thing). But honestly, if he was, who freaking *cares*. But considering he's not, I wish so *much* that political opponents would quit trying to fearmonger people into believing such. I saw a tabloid at the grocery store checkout line recently with this whole thing as a headline, and I know it was silly and juvenile, but I put a random magazine in front of it. : / Just made me feel less RARGH to not stare at it while I was there.

*nods nods nods* But the thing is, it's not even at ground zero. It's two blocks away! AUGH.
Right! On one hand, it shouldn't matter what faith he believes in. On the other, they're deliberately misconstruing his words and actions and pushing being Muslim as an awful thing. The whole thing, along with the not born in America conspiracy, is just ridiculous.
Also, *snrk*, I called a guy out on the "Obama not being an American" in the middle of physics last year. I called him a redneck idiot.

10) LAPTOP! :D
I've watched the first episode of Sherlock and I found it okay. I don't have the desire to track down the other two episodes, but I might watch them with my sister at some point. But I did find that none of the characters grabbed me and I had no investment in what happened. There must be something to since it's taken fandom by storm, and I like the straight up admitting that Sherlock is a sociopath. But yeah, over all it's pretty meh. *shrugs*
ICONS! I really love that Bela one. <333
ETA: Um just need to say that James Franco!Benvolio does things to me. UNF. I'm not sure about Mercutio though. I really fucking loved the actor in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet, so my brain tends to default to him.
no subject
Date: 2010-08-30 01:52 pm (UTC)And I have faith in you! You'll get it done. And I'm excited for mine. I just hate finishing things. XD
I liked the admitting he was a sociopath thing too. Because, well, he is. But at the same time, I don't necessarily want to watch a show about a sociopath. He has to have more going for him than sociopathy. :P I really wish I knew what the rest of fandom saw in it though. : / I don't think it's even that slashy; I thought the scene in the diner in the first episode was incredibly awkward and painful as opposed to funny and subtexty.
~Kanye shrug
I love it tooooo. <33333 BELA.
I really like that guy too. But familiar wants ~someone else. She won't tell what kind of person she's looking for though. So I'm just throwing names at her at this point.

Date: 2010-08-30 05:10 pm (UTC)You know, I liked Sherlock a whole lot more than you did (though a whole lot less than the rest of the internet seemed to /o\ ), but this: the whole gimmick of this show is that it's a modern retelling of Sherlock Holmes. But so far, that just seems to be: Holmes and Watson with... CELLPHONES. just OMG YES. I am such a fan of adaptations, especially when they offer something new and original and fascinating, and this has definitely let me down in that way. :(
