She misses Corbett. A lot. The two of them used to talk.

They still do.

But not in a creepy, he’s-a-ghost kind of way. She’s pretty sure Corbett’s ghost disappeared after he saved them from Daggett. Maggie doesn’t know what happened to him afterward, but she really hopes he’s happy.

Anyway, like she was saying. They still talk, in a totally non-supernatural way that means she does all the talking. She likes to visit his grave, always brings flowers too. Bright colors: yellows and oranges and fuschias, because she thinks Corbett would like that. Though even he was too much of a boy to ever admit he liked flowers.

The others visit too, Ed more than the others, and maybe it’s because they're siblings so he always knows when she’s visiting, and maybe it’s something else. But Maggie visits the most, and she stays the longest.

Back when Corbett was alive, they talked about boys. She never really understood what he saw in Tom Cruise. The guy’s nuts, and even when he was younger, he kinda looked like a rodent. And he never saw the appeal of Owen Wilson, which. Whatever. But they both agreed that George Clooney was a silver fox and if either of them ever had the chance to sleep with Jake Gyllenhaal, they were obligated to take it.

Even if they were in a relationship at the time.

She knew he had a crush on Ed; though neither of them ever mentioned it. Corbett wasn’t exactly subtle. Sometimes, she’d even daydream about her marrying Harry and Ed marrying Corbett (in a world where gay marriage is legal, and also, her brother never actually has sex. Ever. Because, ew.), and then she and Corbett would be siblings-in-law and watch movies together and share tips on raising kids and moon over movie stars. Spruce would be around too, doing something. She was never really clear on that part.

It was a stupid daydream, yeah, she’ll admit that. Maggie’s like eighty-five percent sure Ed’s straight anyway.

But she still misses Corbett. Back in May, when she saw the new Star Trek movie, her first reaction was to call Corbett and gibber about how insanely fine Chris Pine was. GQMF, indeed. And that was a whole year and three months after Corbett’s death.

She mentioned Chris Pine to Corbett when she visited, but she didn’t dwell on him.  Boys are what they used to talk about; they talk about everything now. Well, Maggie does. First thing she ever told Corbett after he died was that she was done being a Ghostfacer.

Or, done as she could be while being the sister of one and dating another. But she hadn’t even really believed in ghosts before the Morton House. It was just another one of Ed and Harry’s silly fantasies, and it had seemed like a fun way to pass the time and to spend more time with Harry. Which, okay, was incredibly stupid, because that’s what they always say in horror movies, and rule number one of horror movies is don’t go into the fucking haunted house, fucktard. But she went into the haunted house- they went into the haunted house- and Corbett died. And, yeah, there are ghosts and probably an afterlife and all that, but there’s still something terribly final about death. It wasn’t really something she could deal with, not really something she wanted to deal with.

So Maggie quit being a Ghostfacer.

She still tells Corbett about what the Ghostfacers are up to though, because being a Ghostfacer is what he wanted more than anything in the world (besides her brother, which is cute but also really awkward and weird if she thinks about it too much), and because she doesn’t think he would really approve of her quitting. But that’s okay, Harry and Ed weren’t happy either.  She mentioned their internet videos once, and how well those are doing. Most people seem to think they’re a joke, meant to be funny, but there are some true believers out there. A guy named Dean Smith wrote in back in April, thanking them for their advice. Said it was really helpful for a ghost problem he had at work.

She talks about personal stuff too. Like her relationship with Harry, school, how much trouble she’s having getting a job. Current events and politics get covered as well. November 5th, she sped on her way to the cemetery, to tell Corbett all about the election results. Even back in February when Clinton and Obama had been in their knock down, drag out war of attrition, he’d been campaigning for the Illinois senator. It was nice to be able to tell him that, would have been nicer to not have to have told him at all.

Actually, current events are more and more her main topic of conversation these days. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the world. North Korea, Iran, fires, floods, earthquakes, and the bizarre news feeds that Harry and Ed follow have been overflowing with stories. Plagues of locusts, rains of frogs, people disappearing, rivers running red.

Maggie’s scared, and Corbett’s the only one she’ll tell that to.

She still has Sam and Dean’s number, and she thinks about calling them sometimes. But she remembers what Sam said about Dean dying soon, and if she’s having a hard time dealing with Corbett’s death, there’s no way Sam could ever get over Dean’s. Maggie didn’t know either of them that long, but it was pretty clear they’re more important to each other than she’ll ever be to anyone or anyone will ever be to her. She’s thankful for that, really.

But she still misses Corbett. So she visits him every week, brings flowers, and talks about whatever. Because she thinks he’d like that, and he was her friend, and the thing about being a Ghostfacer is that you have to be brave enough to face the dead.

So maybe she’s still a Ghostfacer after all.

-End

I really enjoyed this. Kind of sad, but sweet. I liked Maggie and you did a great job portraying her. Loved the reference to It's a Terrible Life.
Who's next on your list?

Thank you! I'm so glad the characterization worked for you.

And I'm not really sure who's next. I'm kinda just going wherever my muse takes me. But I have an idea for Missouri and another one for Mary and Tess the Reaper. So maybe one of those.

I love Maggie and I am so glad there's fic about her. This is really bittersweet but fun too with all of the pop culture references.

She's a great character, isn't she? And I'm glad you liked and that the mixture of bittersweet and silly worked for you.

OMG! A Maggie fic! I don't think I knew until now how much I wanted a Maggie fic! Maggie is so awesome.

I really liked this. I love the idea that Maggie and Corbett were buds, and I like this positive spin on the Ghostfacers, since we usually see them portrayed as bumbling fools. (Okay, I've written that, too.)

Awesome job, BB.

Well, Harry and Ed are kind of bumbling fools. *g* But I love Maggie and Corbett, and I'd want to be buds with both of them if I got the chance.

Anyway, thank you so much!

I really, really enjoyed this. The characterization feels really true and sweet, and I love the idea of Maggie and Corbett having been close buds and having dished about their TV and movie actor crushes! Also, I loved the references to Dean Smith and to Sam and Dean. The way you mention them is subtle, but it adds another deeper layer to the story that works beautifully. Thank you for sharing this lovely idea!!

Aaaw! I really enjoyed this, which is weird because I never really thought about Maggie before, and I never read Ghostfacer fic, but this was awesome. Bittersweet and poignant, and just a really well-written. I love the reference to Dean Smith using their advice, haha.

Also HAY FELLOW GQMF-ER! I'm a huge Star Trek XI fan so that made me geek out, haha.

Exactly what I was going for. Because that's the way life is, ya know? It's not unremitting angst or pure hilarity. It kinda sucks, but there are definitely some sweet spots.

[livejournal.com profile] scintilla10 has been talking me around to Maggie lately and your take on her really cements why I should think that she's awesome. I love that you've built up the friendship between these two characters and had them in on each other's secrets. I can imagine the two of them giggling over private jokes while Harry and Ed looked on confused and I really, really love that idea.

A guy named Dean Smith wrote in back in April, thanking them for their advice. Said it was really helpful for a ghost problem he had at work.
*snorts* Good line.

Maggie’s scared, and Corbett’s the only one she’ll tell that to.
This is really, really poignant!

She’s thankful for that, really.
Smart girl.

AND THE ENDING. Oh the ending killed me a little bit, with it's quiet and bold little statement about the different ways you can be strong.

Lovely, as ever!

Spruce would be around too, doing something. She was never really clear on that part.

WELL-PLAYED.

Maggie didn’t know either of them that long, but it was pretty clear they’re more important to each other than she’ll ever be to anyone or anyone will ever be to her. She’s thankful for that, really.
Oh man. These lines gave me a lot of feelings, a couple of them conflicting with each other, most of them wanting to give Maggie and Sam and Dean hugs.

This is WONDERFUL. The Ghostfacers are among my favorite minor characters in SPN and it's great to come across fic for them. Maggie's voice is engaging and has such a charming cadence to it. She's so sensible and loving and she SPED TO CORBETT ON NOVEMBER 5 TO TELL HIM ABOUT THE ELECTION RESULTS. <3

Spruce! Forever the fifth wheel. </3 It's a hard job, but someone has to do it. *g* Hugs is generally a good reaction, imho. :DDDDD Thank you! I adore the Ghostfacers, and I'd like to see more of them. (Um, with the caveat we are not only seeing more of them so show can kill hem off). I am so glad you like Maggie's voice and characterization here. It was a treat to write. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment! <333
