Hey everybody! Sorry about the post last night. ): I just had a EVERYTHING BAD IS HAPPENING AT ONCE combined with I AM PRETTY DRUNK AND ALSO WITHOUT ANYONE TO CUDDLE RN kind of night. But earlier in the night was all kinds of wonderful! Thanks to everyone who commented. <3333[Poll #1759245]And even if there is no interest in doing some kind of support group, I am going to try to do at least weekly updates of my own goals/progress/lack of progress, etc. Because having an audience helps. :P

Date: 2011-07-06 01:46 pm (UTC)Second! I've always made a point of staying away from calorie counting (it's always struck me as something I could get really unhealthily obsessed with), so you wouldn't be alone in ignoring that aspect of it and focusing on other aspects of eating well for you.

Date: 2011-07-06 01:52 pm (UTC)I may just try and stick to portion control or something.

Date: 2011-07-06 02:35 pm (UTC)Good luck with portion control or whatever approach you decide to take!

Date: 2011-07-06 02:54 pm (UTC)I was thinking about it last night, and how a comm would ideally work would be, you set some kind of goal or goals. It could be anything as specific and measurable as, "lose x pounds" or "get to a size y" or "get my BMI to z" or "participate in a 5k race". Or it could just be something like, "eat more fruits and veggies," "be less winded when I walk three flights of stairs" or "learn to salsa dance" or "walk everyday" or "I'm happy with my current weight but I'd really like to have more energy at the end of the day so I'm going to try to eat better." Or something else! Or some combination of the above!
And then once you've made your goal(s), there'd have a weekly check in where you would just say what you're doing in terms of meeting your goal. And that could be something like accounting for how many calories you consumed over the course of the week and how much and what kind of exercise you did each day complete with graphs and charts and paragraphs of analyses. Or you could just say, I ate 12 more pieces of fruit and much less candy than I normally do and feel more energetic. And some weeks you could do charts and graphs and detailed analyses, and some weeks you can just say, "well I walked every day" or "I started controlling my portions by eating with a smaller plate". Whatever works for you.
It would most likely be optional to share check ins with the comm at large. This is very much about having a way for you to keep track of whatever you feel needs keeping track of. And then you have the comm there as a support group. So there would be, like, (and this is all hypothetical at this point), twice-weekly posts where everyone talks about how they're feeling/doing/bitch and moan/swap tips/share stories, etc. And there would probably be other non-fitness related posts and activities, like Friday Night Movie Nights or something just so we can all be friends and really build a sense of community. It's definitely something I'd have to think about if there's an interest in a comm. And I'd vet any potential rules/schedules/etc with my f'list first.
If you have any thoughts on all this, I'd be super interested to hear them. Obviously I don't know the best way to be an active, healthy person, so I'm kind of hoping this is something a lot of us can muddle through together.

Date: 2011-07-06 08:07 pm (UTC)Personally I love the idea of goals, since they can all be personal, but also be something achievable and everyone can support each other in them. I also think that informing others of them can help to keep people focused. Mine would be improving stamina and getting some abs, since it is just something I've also wanted. I like the idea of a weekly check in, too that can be as detailed as someone likes.
I would say that measurements can be a useful way of checking progress, since BMI and weight doesn't take into a person's structure or muscle etc. I'm personally not that much of a fan of it.
The optional check in sounds good. I think that everyone if possible should try to say one achievement they had no matter how small, so maybe a weekly post for that would be good? Then if people want to do a personal post they can and have their name tagged in those posts. I think building a sense of community is good, it can make people feel more at ease when participating :).
I know there are tumblrs (referred to as fitblrs) I can link to and some other posts around that give advice on what to do. I picked up most things there. Might be useful for where to start?

Date: 2011-07-06 02:57 pm (UTC)Walking every day is such a good promise. I remember as a kid my mom would periodically set that goal, and I always loved tagging along. WALKING <3333

Date: 2011-07-09 06:02 pm (UTC)Also, I totally want to do some kind of post or something where everyone shares music that they like to work out to.

Date: 2011-07-06 07:16 pm (UTC)(Though what I do to trick myself into doing the recommended amount of working out is to split it in two small bursts. If I spend too long on my excercise bike, my butt goes totally numb but if I do like one small spurt of 15-30 minutes in the morning and one before bed, then I've gotten it done and don't feel like I wasted so much time up there.)

Date: 2011-07-07 04:35 am (UTC)I've never done ellipticals but one of the main attractions it has is that you can use your ipod on it! It drives me crazy that I can't while swimming, because laps get really boring by yourself.
LET US SET A DAY, would you prefer the weekend or an evening during the week?

I would be interested in this as well. I need to stop eating crap and actually do swimming and things. :( Email might be easiest for me? Idk. I am a little iffy on like publicly doing this stuff? Because idk food/body issues, I have them, idk. But I think it would be good because I am always out of shape and I eat like crap and I should drop like twenty pounds AND THINGS.
So, uh, yes.

Date: 2011-07-09 06:12 pm (UTC)I like pushing other people though. And pulling their feet down.
General consensus seems to be a locked comm. I'm going to post the rules/structures here later today or tomorrow for people to vet, and that should give you an idea if this is something you'd want to join. I am going to try to make it as safe and supportive a space as possible. Because I totally get body and food issues.
HOWEVER. If you don't want to join, you and I can always do some kind of email thing. Since I am going to be keeping track of all of this stuff anyway.

Date: 2011-07-10 05:06 am (UTC)What I do is figure out my approximate size and then order online and send things back if they don't fit. (I really like swimoutlet.com because they are cheap.) And then I usually wear pants over my suit until I am ready to swim. :////
OH MY GOD DO YOU WANT TO MAKE YOUR LIFEGUARD CRY. ::frowny face::
<3333333 Well, I'll watch it until I figure out what y'all are going to do. :)
