That's an interesting distinction to make. And, I think, when it comes to non-canon for me, I'm torn on the matter. Part of me wants there to be a world in which Sam marries Jess and Dean marries whoever and they have their apple pie life. But another part of me- probably the larger part- hates that prospect. I love Sam and Dean because they're so epic.

I did! I was in a mood for a change. I like it, though I'm not sure yet how I feel about having the calender and links and such on the right hand side. I need some time to get used to it.

It would be really odd if Ben came back and was all, "Hey! I actually am your son!" But, SPN's brought back characters randomly like that before. I would actually not be surprised if it became a plot point or something like that in season 6. : /

Not that I wouldn't love for Dean to have a son (he's so great with the kids even if he thinks he isn't), but I don't think Ben is his son. The way the mother said it made it clear that no, it isn't his. I think they just wanted to make Dean play with the idea for a moment..

And I don't think he is. I mean, I've read fic and stuff where he is. But. It doesn't work for me? I did however have a small glimmer of hope when I first saw the ep and was like OMG PLEASE LET IT BE HIS SON. Then I realised. Dean could never ever give up hunting (at least not then), it's who he is. And he'd never want to raise a kid, who's had a taste of normal, in that life.

Does any of that make sense? Like, at times I wish he was, but deep down, no I don't think he is and I don't want him to be. I also like to think that if/when Dean has a kid, he'd be there from the beginning.

I really don't think he is. I know they pushed the whole 'just like Dean' thing, and it was comical and worked, but I am also a firm believer in nurture versus nature. It's obvious that Lisa has/had a type, and so it's likely she was into that kind of stuff. Likely that Ben picked up on it and was encouraged to like AC/DC and black shirts and talkin' all sly.

I'm still undecided on nature vs. nurture, which may be the result of growing up in a household of four kids with very different personalities but shared values. But you're right; Ben could have easily picked up his preferences from Lisa, or, since she seems like she was pretty wild back in the day, it could be something she (or the dad, whoever he is) passed on.

I'm a no in this one. To a certain degree, I want Dean to have his 'apple pie' life with the 2.5 kids and the beautiful wife and the white picket fence (although he is never, EVER allowed to trade the Impala in for a Volvo) because it would really make him happy, so long as Sam could share in his new life in some way. Maybe live next door with Jess and his 2.5 kids?

On the other hand, I never want them to get that. I think the point of the show is them being hunters, and even if they did try to quit, it would come back to hunt them.

And on the third hand, if Dean did get his secret dream life, I always kind of imagined it would be with Jo or someone else we've already met. And that would make me a lot happier.

I don't think he is, nor do I want him to be. I think Dean wanted him to be, but things like what kind of clothes he wears and music he likes really isn't genetic. I think Dean saw a little him with a good life, saw a good life he could have, and wanted it no matter if he was forcing it.

Plus, it would be really awkward to explain to a kid that "Daddy just likes Uncle Sam A LOT."

In canon? No. In my mind? Yes. I mean, their similarities are learned behaviors, so it doesn't especially make sense, but the two are so alike that I want Dean to be his father so bad. Plus I really like Ben's mom and thought she would be good for Dean, and I know Dean secretly wants the whole picket fence gig, and I feel like they'd be the perfect family to have that with.

It just wouldn't work for me as the eventual resolution of the storyline or as an action in character. Academic Writing/Success/Whatever centres are super handy tools! Their programs are pretty much the reason I made it through my undergrad, though given that I had to relearn how to study almost from scratch (funny how a brain injury changes things!), I may be an extreme case :P Still! It may be of interest to you. Also, if you're uncomfortable going in but are still interesting in the general idea, I have scattered notes on all sorts of topics. (If you were just looking to vent, or for commiseration, please feel free to ignore the above.)

Regarding Ben and Dean, and not that canon will ever address it, but I'd be really happy to go with wherever the show takes it. I'm not especially invested, although I wonder sometimes what Dean thinks. He has to have wondered, sometimes, if she was being honest or just handing him an easy way out or a polite rejection.

It's less that I have trouble actually writing the essay, and more that I have trouble sitting down and actually writing it. Days I reserve for essay writing usually end up being days I get a lot of other stuff I've been avoiding done, like my laundry or cleaning my room or stocking up on supplies. x__x

I dunno. Maybe talking to someone about my essays would help me get them done quicker. I'm definitely interested in any notes you might have.

HOW COULD YOU ASK ME THAT QUESTION, COY? I'm not even voting on that poll. Because it's not that I'm undecided. I'm pretty sure Dean IS Ben's father, but in all practicality it doesn't matter because he's not the person that raised him, so he can be the father, but he doesn't get to be a Dad and that's what Dean wants (and, frankly, what I want for him). I just took a pretty epic midterm, so I'm not sure I'm making sense, but what I mean is that if Dean is the father, I'd want him to be able to raise Ben, but he didn't get to and his life right now doesn't allow for that, so ultimately she did right by Dean by saying he's not (whether it is or isn't the truth).

ETA: I just re-read this and I think I sound kind of hostile. I just meant I wanted a little "I will explain in comments" ticky. :D ILU.

I know since season 2 Sam and Dean have slowly been switching places as far as what they want out of life (Dean now wants normal; Sam, well he doesn't want, but he's cool with the hunting life as long as Dean's alive), but I'm really not sure if Dean REALLY wants normal or if he's just in love with the idea of it. I think he actually got it, he would just get bored and feel like he wasn't doing enough. Because Dean needs constant affirmation that he has worth as a human, and, when the Apocalypse isn't happening, I think his surest way of getting that is saving people.
